We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer who has experience refurbishing and replacing gates to monitor water level and sensitivity of the river.

This role is for a client based in Dumfries. This is a long term contract position for 12 months with a scope to extend. The specific role covers the implementation of key mechanical projects. One of the projects is the replacement of a key mechanical infrastructure. This will involve the replacement of 6 large gates whilst maintaining safety, environmental and long term life. This would be the technical authority for Mechanical engineering technical input and decision-making Projects (decommissioning, development, and construction) with a value up to £10M

Key Accountabilities:

The post holder will be expected to perform all tasks within their level of competence including:

  • Provide technical supervision, design review and governance of engineering projects.
  • Responsible for financial control of capital expenditure within budget area, including, preparation, incidencing and developing expenditure requirements for the Business Plan, and ultimate delivery of projects as per the Procurement Plan.
  • Provide site supervision of projects
  • Active engagement with the behavioural safety programme carrying out safety tours with staff and contractors.
  • Provide immediate authoritative technical advice
  • Identify the Mechanical engineering aspects of the long-term plant investment plan for the business.
  • Discharge the role of Work Sponsor with respect to Contractors under direct control.
  • As part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, take responsibility for project(s) delivery over the complete project lifecycle, e.g. inception, design, procurement and construct phases, engineering contractors and consultants as required.
  • Ability to interpret complex analytical data to extract the critical factors in crucial situations to ensure effective solutions and decision making.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

  • Suitably Qualified (Honours Degree) in a relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical) or equivalent.
  • Chartered membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (or equivalent) is preferrable.  
  • Extensive relevant work experience in the Mechanical Engineering industry.
  • Extensive working knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering industry standards and legislation. General knowledge of a wide range of subject and specialist knowledge of a few areas of mechanical engineering.
  • Highly developed communications and negotiation skills with the ability to form effective working relationships and persuade others to help them solve problems.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of current Health and safety legislation i.e. CDM. Also hold a currently recognised health and safety qualification such as IOSH, NEBOSH, ECITB card or equivalent.
  • Organises own workload in consultation with the Hydro Group Engineering Manager to meet the requirements of the various departments within the Business whilst ensuring that key activities are completed, keeping them informed of conflicting requirements.
  • Ability to interpret complex analytical data to extract the critical factors in crucial situations to ensure effective solutions and decision making.
  • Organises own workload to meet the expectations of all stakeholders.
  • High level of computer literacy is required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, especially in harnessing support and resources without line authority
  • An awareness of safe systems of work and perimetry requirements for site activities is beneficial.
